Unexpected faces

Monoprint using acrylic paint on tracing paper, A4 size.

From time to time I love to draw faces. And the ability to see and produce faces now seems to have seeped deep into my mind and they come out at unexpected times. I tried this printing technique using dark paint on my gelli plate, making monoprints (or monotypes) on tracing paper.

This technique is called monoprint – because you lay down ink or paint on a substrate (glass, gelatine plate or the gelli plate), lay down a paper on top and you can pull of one print. Usually you have to start over again add ink or paint and work out a new image that you then print. Each resulting print is unique.

I didn’t mean to make a woman’s face at first. I was experimenting with the technique, hoping to use it for a specific subject from a fairy tale, but suddenly I thought of a different idea. First a small figure, then larger heads. Step by step I changed the image, printed again. Tried something new. Printed again. This final one I liked best. Therefore I like to share it even though it’s not perfect. I’m happy with it.

This is a technique Carla Sonheim taught in Year of the Spark (a year-long class in 2015). I didn’t get around to actually doing the project at the time. I’m happy to be using it now.

Love her Corinne 🙂 I love the spiky hair by her cheeks, telling me that she has perfect curls coming forward. 🙂
