My drawing and painting life

Wax and tissue paper

Here’s a result from my work using wax and paint.

Encaustic painting using tissue paper and wax medium (WIP), 20×20 cm on MDF panel

We are in the third week of the “Introduction to encaustic painting” class by Stephanie Hargrave (hosted by Carla Sonheim/Carla Sonheim Presents). We are learning how to insert paper into the wax, starting with very thin paper (tissue paper). I love how these very thin pieces simply melt into the wax when heated. I love what you can do with them, layering the colors making a color mix, much like when you mix paint. For example, bottom center you see a first layer of bright yellow, with a cobalt/turquoise-like blue on top – giving a beautiful green. Yellow over pink turns into a soft orangey look. And so on.

You will find the class on Carla Sonheims website among the online classes: Introduction to Encaustic Painting, by Stephanie Hargrave. Twelve lessons, going live during four weeks from mid October;open for self-study after that. This is a rerun from a class that went live in 2014.
