My drawing and painting life

Blissful break from blogging

I have been doing art regularly, just no blogging for a while. I draw from time to time, I am thinking about illustrations for a fairy tale and sketching a lot, experimenting with the encaustic paints and I have a painting class every Tuesday evening.

I’ve joined a group of illustrators started by a friend. She came up with the idea to illustrate  fairy tales together; tales in which a girl or woman has an important part. She found a book of such tales, and we all picked one story from it. We have until the end of November to come up with one or more illustrations. It’s not certain if there will be an actual book we can hold in our hands. For now we are just working on illustration.

I am going through what I learned from the year of the fairy tale, a year long class by Carla Sonheim in 2014. The lessons were rerun over the summer but I couldn’t do the assignments then. Going through the methods turns out to be helpful now I have a tale to illustrate. This time I will choose my own technique. I haven’t chosen a technique to use yet. I’m going through the discovery period – as Carla called it – thinking about my characters and trying to give my girl some ‘body’. I would like her to have a lot of curly hair. I tried to sketch her, first in pen and then using different materials. Here’s some of my drawings.

The left one was done with colored charcoal (Art Chunky’s by Cretacolor – I bought three colors to try out and love them!), the one on the right with pencil and Neocolor II crayons (limited amount of colors).

I’ve also made thumbnail sketches of many scenes from the story. That resulted in many ideas and lots to look into. I will try out some techniques for making illustrations in the weeks to come – and then choose which I like best.

I still have a long way to go until a finished illustration.
