My drawing and painting life
A quick note and photo. Tuesday evening I was in the studio with my oil painting teacher, Mieke Siemons. Over the past five years I’ve taken painting classes with Mieke and it’s always a great experience. We’ve studied a lot of painters and tried to learn from painting like them (not copying their work, but working in their style). In the process we also learn about art history. First in the courses we worked with acrylic paint and since last year we’ve been working with oil paint. So that’s what we did Tuesday. I hadn’t worked with oils for a while. So I felt a bit unsure. But it felt so good to be working in a group again!
We will be studying the work of four female painters who lived and worked in the 20th Century: Jacoba van Heemskerck, Sonia Delauney, Joan Mitchell, Elaine de Kooning. There’s three to go over the course of the next 8 weeks. And I’m so looking forward to it.
Back to Tuesdays work on Jacoba van Heemskerck. She is a Dutch female painter, a contemporary of Mondriaan and Toorop. She lived in Den Haag. She studied in Den Haag, lived in Paris for a while. At first she was on a similar track towards abstract work much as other Dutch painters such as Mondriaan. Later on she turned for inspiration and cooperation to other artists and artists groups like the German expressionists. I decided to study one of Jacoba’s works and make a master copy of one of her paintings.
Unfortunately I missed the first lesson due to my ongoing knee trouble. The other night I could do it, but I ended up with a little more pain today. We’ll see how the knee holds up in the weeks to come.
