My drawing and painting life

Another Art Heist result

Well, you know…. that is a result from that wonderful course by Krista Peel.

Jun15_paper study_Matisse, Red interior ...1947

Another Paper study taking a work by a master, again Henri Matisse. The original is a painting called ‘Interieur rouge, nature morte sur table bleu’ ( Red interior. Still life on a blue table), from 1947.

Again I’m learning from him and about him. I learned things and ended up with new questions to put to him (or to look for in his work).

A lesson learned:

Reading in the book about Matisse, I learned that he painted a lot of paintings about the connection between the interior and the exterior. Many paintings are set on the space connecting inside and outside (people on balconies, at windows). He paints the connection. In this painting that’s become visible in the patterned red background that is both inside and out (on the terrace outside the open door or window). The way he paints it, rather flat, with a weird perspective, it’s a bit hard to tell whether there is actually an outside and inside. It’s not the main motif in the painting, but an element seen in many paintings.

Some questions:

  • What made him paint that pattern like that? What made him think of crooked lines? That is an element that’s rather different from the other painting (see yesterdays blogpost). I thought he perhaps painted rooms in the same house in 1947, though perhaps not the same room. What was made up and what was ‘painted from nature’?
  • The fruits on the table are on an odd shape (odd shaped object). What is it, a piece of cloth, a strange shaped dish, or a stain on the table? It’s hard to tell.

The longer I look at it, the longer I think about it, the more questions come up for me about Matisse. A good reason to study some more. Some time…

PS. This is the last one from a pre-scheduled set of blog posts. My shoulder is still not doing well. Movement is ‘impinged’, I’m having fysio therapy once a week and hope it’ll get better soon. I will see this coming weekend if I will schedule another set.

Looks really cool and seems to be great to dive into the work of a master!

Hope your shoulder gets better, Corinne. Sorry to hear you are still having issues with it. 😔 I like how you created this collage. I enjoyed reading your observations. 💕🎨
