My drawing and painting life

Leftover birds

Leftovers from April

Yesterday’s post took quite a while to write. I wasn;t sure about what I did on some days, but I was ready to post anyway. It was time to stop working and stop fussing over the post. And by that time I thought I had put in all the art work of April. It turns out I forgot that some drawings were already in a special folder. I made some bird studies in pen and pencil between the paintings in watercolor.

Before the April 19 painting I made these four studies of the ‘bluetit’ (or ‘blue tit’; in Dutch called ‘pimpelmees’) in ballpoint pen after images from a bird book from the library.

I used the drawings to get a feel for the birds typical features, its colors, stripes, posture and so on. I love that bird, as it comes into my garden a lot. I jumps and flies from one bush to the next. There are often two of them these days, though you also see them as part of a larger troup of similar birds (especially the great titmouse, of great tits – in Dutch: koolmees).

I drew another bird with a similar name (with a ‘-mees’ ending) on April 21, called ‘staartmees’ in Dutch, long-tailed tit in  English. This time I used tracing paper. It’s sometimes a good way to study a subject, to simply trace and get the feel for the shapes. I did that on this one – as well as make one bird, drawing by hand (no tracing).

PS I edited the two pieces into yesterday’s blogpost – but figured it’s a good idea to give them a separate post as it shows different ways of drawing and studying a subject.

I especially love the blue ball point pen drawings. They are so fresh and beautiful. They call out for a journal type series:)

Thanks Beth. I appreciate your comment, very much. I’m not sure though what you mean by ‘journal type series’. Please elaborate. I would love to hear from you.
