My drawing and painting life

Speeding up slowly

Day 135 / Jan 13 painting #1

On the days before this I was working on several pieces at a time, taking the time to layer. I worked on several pieces this day too, some of which took several days. Now for this piece (and another) I decided to speed up. All in all this one started on Jan 9 (blobs), proceeded on Jan 11 and finished on Jan 13th. Still five days in between.

The drawing was made the day before. I also added some gesso on the blobs here and there. On day 135 I just added paint, all in one sitting, seeing what would happen, layering wet into wet and using some thicker paint here and there. I will accept the imperfection of this method and enjoy the way watercolor has a mind of it’s own.

I have been struggling with the top animal – in the end I decided to give it human legs and make it sit like in Pilates (or yoga-lates) in the so-called C-spine shape.

It is trying not to stress , hoping that sitting by the stream will help. If only that creature below the water would stop hooting it’s trumpet the whole time. ‘Hey! I’m trying to be at peace with the world here! Stop it!’ Then he decided to shut up and breathe, focus on the post, hoping the little trumpet sounds would melt away in the background.

Another example of slowly speeding up

Speeding up – is what I am doing while painting – to invite some adventure. Though on some pieces the speeding up is only very slowly. In the music of Ravel, the “Bolero” , the music speeds up slowly too. The building up is done in two ways, also by adding more and more instruments. The snare drum is the one slowly increasing the speed playing the same rhythm again and again (a 169 times it says in one of the comments).

I remember this piece from a movie… in which they showed a beautiful choreography by Maurice Béjart… have to look that up. … Ah, found it, that was the movie: “Les Uns et les Autres (1981)” directed by Claude Lelouch.

Your little creatures here make me happy! I think they are my favorite of all I have seen! Love. Love this painting!
