My drawing and painting life

Day 110 Inspiration from Japan

I joined Alena Hennessy’s  online course A Year of Painting in August. After having done  some of her lessons in Life Book 2014 and 2015, I decided to try that longer course because I was intrigued by the intuitive painting process.

I have done several of the lessons of A Year of Painting by now. I am inspired by her use of acrylic ink and just finding what to paint as you go – intuitively – rather than planning it beforehand.

A more recent lesson I picked up was on taking inspiration from another culture, or rather from contemporary art from a different culture or country, in this case: Japanese art.

I tried to follow Alena’s work in her video, made two lovely color block backgrounds. Here’s one:Dec19 japanese inspired color blocks_crop

I started drawing with ink with an ink dropper on one. Diving into the art by contemporary Japanese artists, I suddenly changed course and sketched the following sketchy scene.

I was inspired the example of a contemporary artist (Ray Miramura) who makes wonderful peaceful scenes, especially of houses in a forest. I sketched based on his work – not touching the quality of his work – but getting to know him anyway. His colors are much more muted, and the lines are so clear and straight.

I got the composition wrong, so I  worked on but filled the page too quickly, and ended up not happy at all with the result. I learned a great deal about Japanese contemporary art though. So time well spent.

Have a look in my Pinterest board on older and contemporary Japanese art.

Your sketchy scene is amazing, makes me wanting to try something similar. And your pinterest collection is great, thanks for sharing!
