My drawing and painting life
On May 17th the Happiness Route was held in my hometown Utrecht. The idea was to share something that makes you happy. I took the chance of trying out a workshop about drawing.
I was glad to able to do it at Savannah Bay, a bookshop I like to go to a lot. There are several bookshops in town – and of course there’s always the easy way to shop online – but when I can I try to buy locally and if possible I go here. Bookshops are having a rough time – and Savannah Bay has a special place in my heart. I like the friendly spirit.
It was a nice experience. We started out with just a few people, but later on it got busier. Given that the happiness route is a free event – and many more things are offered – some people just walk in and decide to join on a whim. Which was fine. I was happy for having such a good host provided by the bookshop. She happily informed everyone we were having a free drawing workshop and invited everyone interested to join. Halfway three lovely Canadian women visiting Utrecht walked in and joined our group. This dynamic called for some improvisation and for translating the assignment ‘on the go’. This was a bit confusing at times and led me to speaking Dutch to Canadians and English to the Dutch – but in the end it all worked out fine and everyone was drawing in a nice atmosphere.
As we were a small group I could join in the work from time to time. The photos were made with the consent of the participants.
