My drawing and painting life

Pelican in black and white

I learned a new technique recently – ink resist aka gouache resist – part of the ‘Birds in watercolor and beyond’ class by Val Webb.  In fact the class has ten lessons, and in some we used watercolor as well as gouache and india ink.

If  you are interested in her work, do check Val Webbs website and blog The Illustrated Garden! Her courses are wonderful and really reasonably priced too. She is the kind of teacher that will give you a great step by step introduction on a technique. This means an online lesson video can be up to an hour, a lesson sometimes two videos. For those who think that is a bit long: she occasionally tells a good story while painting. You can also find Val Webb on Facebook.

I couldn’t help but share this work in progress. I love how it looks like a wood print, the rough edges on the piece and the bold black lines. For a while I thought I will leave it as is, but it’s supposed to look even better when painted, so I am doing that now.

This pelican is almost a copy from what Val painted in the class (though mine is a bit messy behind the head unfortunately). I am hoping to make more using the same technique. Next time taking a different subject, perhaps an eagle or a falcon.

More pics will follow, after I have put on the watercolor.

I’m looking forward to seeing the finished piece but you’re right about it looking good as is.
