My drawing and painting life
On Saturday I visited the Alkmaar Art Festival. The best part was meeting in person two participants of the year long online class – Year of the Spark : Herma and Petra.
The Festival was about amateur art, theater and music and had a lovely atmosphere. The singer-songwriter stage was just around the corner from where we were – and we enjoyed the music very much.
Herma was having her own booth in the festival showing several of her lovely paintings and drawings. She was asked to make art at the festival – so people could see her work. She invited us to join her. That was very nice. Both Petra and I started work and this also seemed to attract people to her part of the exhibition, some making their own collage art, others came to look at her art, or just for a chat.
Herma makes lovely layered pieces and uses collage, acrylic paint, paint markers and all kinds of other supplies. It was nice to work with her collage papers and other materials. It’s great to work with materials someone else has chosen or made ; in this case: her painted papers, glue, stamps, colored ink, washi tape, paint pens and pastels). It was also great to see how each of us – Petra, Herma and I – approaches our art work.
Lately when I make mixed media pieces I just start and make several at the same time. At the start I don’t know where I will end up. I work intuitively; as soon as the collage papers are down I start making initial marks on the piece with the materials at hand. And then I respond to the marks that are already on the paper. At the end of the day I had one finished piece and four more started. And several quick drawings. I had a great time!
Here’s a digitally made collage of four of the pieces.
There’s lots of possibilities to work on the three smaller pieces, don’t you think?

Her blog (in Dutch) called: Studio Mastarre
Here’s a collage of an owl she made that day.

Cindy just opened an Etsy shop called “Cindy and Friends”.
