Year of the Fairy Tale illustrations

Project Princes and the unicycle HR_defSince January I have been taking the year-long online course on illustrating by Carla Sonheim called “The Year of the Fairy”tale. It’s been so much fun, so interesting and inspiring. Lots to learn, lots to experience, lovely community of participants sharing their work online and most of all the creativity of Carla is so wonderful.

One of the extra’s on the course were two assignments to deliver an illustration for an e-zine about a fairy tale. The zine was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Princess and the Pea. This tale was the third one in our year-long online class, “Year of the Fairy Tale”. The e-zine was an optional assignment. Everyone – whether newbie or seasoned artist – could submit.

Each participant chose a word to incorporate into the “bed scene” of this modified tale – to place instead of the ‘traditional’ Pea. Each participant then drew/painted/made an illustration about the Princess and…. (fill in your own thing / animal / being ). The results have been compiled into a PDF and can be found on a special page on Carla Sonheims website. Go and have a look and enjoy these lovely, charming, colorful, surprising and touching illustrations

Recently I worked on an illustration for the second e-zine. I don’t want to give any of it away, so no pics for the moment. I can only say it is loosely based on the fairy tale from last month: The Magic Horse. Over the past few days I worked on it, it involved a lot of tests, some trying out of different techniques from the course (and others too) to find one I liked. In the end I decided on using alcohol inks, acrylic paint and paint markers. I am quite happy with the result.

The e-zine will be published on December 1st! Be sure to check back here – or to Carla Sonheim website. I can’t wait to see what all the others have come up with. Till then, no image to share, though…..

So I will leave you with a flink to the illustrations for the e-zine o April. That is, if you missed it earlier in the text. My page is 26: The Princess and the Unicycle!
