My drawing and painting life
This month I made ten artist trading cards with a floral motive. In a way it is a result from my art class on collage, an extra assignment as it were. Some of the participants decided to make Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s) and exchange them.
For those of you who don’t know what ATC’s are: they are cards of a standards size (2,5 by 3,5 inches), a size that is similar to American baseball cards. They are painted little art works. Artists trade them or give them away.
I am trading with two of my class mates from the online art class by Lynn Whipple, called ‘Joy of Collage’. The idea is to use the techniques we learned from Lynn Whipple and apply on the small cards.
It’s a wonderful way to make connections in the worldwide art making community.
How were they made?
I started the cards by collageing a background out of randomly placed torn pieces of paper on a 9 by 12 inch watercolor paper. I cut 10 cards out of that. I cut them with the picture side down, so what the background would look like was a matter of chance too.
For four of the cards I used copies of some of the vintage photo’s I recently bought in a thrift shop. The photos date back to the early 20th century and some are even older. I had two pictures of well dressed men, one with a beautiful moustache (see image) and one with a beard and moustache.
For some other cards, like the one at the top of this post, I made a flower collage from torn colored paper and painted papers.
All in all most cards have at least four layers: collage papers and glue; vintage photos or more collage papers; gesso and or house paint; pencil smudging for shadows; acrylic paints for the dots.
In the end most of the cards have a floral motive and on some even a bird appeared. After all I am still in a bird challenge. 😉
