My drawing and painting life

I am drawing birds a lot these days with just paper and pen or pencil. So my results are mainly black and white. At least, that’s what you’ve seen from me in the last few posts.

From time to time I just need to work with color. Also I like to try new materials and experiment. A few months ago I tried out Yupo paper. That was  part of a wonderful year long online class from Carla Sonheim, called ‘The Year of the Fairy Tale’ (but that’s a subject for another time). Yupo is called a kind of watercolor paper, but it looks and feels like it’s made of plastic. Rather weird… watercolor dries in puddles and has to be left lying flat for quite some time to dry.

The other day I went back to the Yupo paper and tried out alcohol inks on it. Wow, the alchohol evaporates (windows open!) and it dries quickly.  It’s hard to make the inks work the way I want. It took some try-outs that looked yuck!

Then I tried to make a peacock, using a photo reference. Birds_Sep14 #26 Peacock_alc ink YupoAnd I love the splash of color!
